Wang Xiang has a habit of collecting product performance from customers every week. "The copper-aluminum connectors produced with our copper-aluminum composite materials have been used in 600 million new energy battery cells of customers such as CATL. So far, there has not been a single case of heating, zero failure." Speaking of the story behind the numbers, Wang Xiang spoke with pride. 

As a private enterprise focusing on the production and research and development of copper-aluminum composite materials, Luoyang Tongyi Company has a special title in the industry-"battery connector heating terminator".

It turns out that one side is copper and the other side is aluminum. How to firmly fit the copper-aluminum connector in the new energy battery cell together like a "double-layer cake" has been a "hard nut to crack" that has plagued the industry for many years. Battery heating and even fire caused by poor bonding is a key "pain point" that China's new energy vehicle industry must solve.

However, just a few years ago, such copper-aluminum composite technology was still subject to the "unspeakable pain" of being restricted by others in my country.

“We can only use imported friction welding equipment from Germany, Japan, etc., which costs 2 million yuan per unit. If you don't bargain, the delivery will be arranged half a year later, and the efficiency is extremely low and difficult to promote.” Wang Xiang said, "But domestic manufacturers have no choice but to look at the faces of foreign big brands."

Unable to bear it, Wang Xiang held his breath and wanted to develop our own domestic technology!

However, without reference parameters and successful precedents, research and development is like "building a tall building on flat ground." "At the beginning, we discussed collectively for three days and three nights. Once the production line was turned on, the copper and aluminum skins could be torn apart with bare hands." Wang Xiang still remembers the frustration caused by the failure in the early stage of research and development. Over the years, the company has invested nearly 100 million yuan in research and development, and more than 1,000 tons of copper and aluminum plates have been scrapped in experiments alone, equivalent to a length of about 80,000 meters!

A sharp sword is made from grinding. After many attempts and repeated attempts, the company's oxygen-free semi-molten rolling composite technology gradually "came to light". Using this process, the generation of oxides in the interface layer is avoided, and high-strength metallurgical bonding between copper and aluminum is achieved, allowing Luoyang Copper No. 1 Company to produce 1-meter-wide copper-aluminum composite plates and strips, and roll copper-aluminum composite materials into 0.08 mm foils. The equipment used is only a domestically produced punch press with a total price of less than one million. 

Using the most ordinary equipment, we did the work that international manufacturers can't do. During the technical exchange activities, Ding Wenjiang, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, said it was "eye-opening", and Zhang Guocheng, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, commented on the "excellent process"! 

160 million yuan in 2020, 420 million yuan in 2021, and 820 million yuan in 2022... Today, Luoyang Copper No. 1 Company, which has an exclusive patent, has seen "explosive growth" in sales revenue year after year, with a market share of about 80%. Its products are supplied to leading companies such as CATL and BYD, and embedded in high-end cars such as Tesla and BMW.
